Utah Department of Transportation Advances Interstate 15 Widening and Safety Improvements

Throughout August 2025, the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) continues its expansive project to widen Interstate 15 (I-15), a vital artery connecting Salt Lake City with key northern and southern regions. This multi-phase initiative focuses on adding travel lanes, reconstructing aging bridges, and upgrading safety features to accommodate rising traffic volumes and reduce congestion.
Work concentrates on sections south of Salt Lake City, where population growth has driven significant increases in commuter and freight traffic. The widening includes expansion of shoulders and medians, improved drainage capacity to mitigate flooding during seasonal storms, and the installation of concrete barriers to enhance driver safety in high-traffic zones.
In parallel with physical upgrades, UDOT is deploying intelligent transportation systems (ITS) that utilize cameras, sensors, and electronic messaging to manage traffic flow dynamically. These ITS components help detect accidents, provide real-time traveler information, and optimize traffic signal timings, reducing delays and improving emergency response.
Scheduling prioritizes nighttime and off-peak operations to minimize disruption during peak travel hours. ADOT’s extensive public outreach campaigns offer detailed information about project timelines, detours, and expected delays, reaching drivers through social media, local news, and variable message signs.
